        1. 1. General

          The Great Indoors Award 2015

          The Great Indoors Award is a biennial international award for interior design in four categories, all within the realm of the commercial and/or public domain. The Great Indoors Award consists of four awards for the most innovative interior designs for public and commercial spaces.


          • Show & Sell (Retail: shops, showrooms, trade-fair stands, exhibitions)
          • Relax & Consume (Leisure: hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, spas, wellness centers)
          • Concentrate & Collaborate (Work: offices, studios, administration buildings, conference centers)
          • Serve & Facilitate (Public: libraries, hospitals, theatres, schools)


          The purpose of The Great Indoors Award is to raise the profile of non-residential interior design and of interior designers working as professionals within this field by;

          • Selecting and awarding the best, realized projects biennially.
          • Signaling developments within the field.
          • Fostering discourse on the profession of non-residential interior design.


          The initiators and organizers of The Great Indoors Award are Frame Publishers (Amsterdam, NL), Stichting Bureau Europa (Maastricht, NL) and Stichting Marres, House for Contemporary Culture (Maastricht, NL). Providing financial support are the City of Maastricht (NL) and the Creative Industries Fund NL. The Great Indoors Award organization will be hereinafter referred to as “GIA”.

          By submitting the online Registration Form (available at http://www.the-great-indoors.com) and paying the Submission Fee in full, the Applicant fully and unreservedly agrees to all of the following terms, clauses and conditions:

        2. 2. Application

          Only non-residential interiors or interior installations in one of the four categories mentioned above will be considered for The Great Indoors Award. Only projects realized between September 2013 and August 2015 are eligible for participation.

          Participation in The Great Indoors Award requires the submission of a fully completed online Registration Form, filled out by the designer(s) and/or his/her/their client(s) before 1 August 2015 (extended deadline). Applicants wishing to submit more than one design may apply in one online account (maximum of 4 designs per login, several logins are possible). It is possible to make changes to the application until paymentof the Submission Fee. After receipt of the online payment it will no longer be possible to make any further changes to the admitted designs.

          In addition to online registration, Applicants must upload the items specified on the Registration Form. GIA is not responsible for entries not received for any reason whatsoever.

          Every design submission requires a Submission Fee of EUR 145 (excl. VAT). Payment must be made through PayPal. PayPal may charge additional costs for each payment.

        3. 3. Participation

          Applicants will receive notification of participation in The Great Indoors Award after GIA has received the required payment and duly completed Registration Form. Participants will receive an invoice by e-mail. Until receipt of the aforementioned notification, Applicants may derive no rights whatsoever from the application, unless stipulated otherwise in these Terms and Conditions.

          GIA reserves the right to refuse or reject an application for any reason whatsoever, and to its sole discretion and/or right to revoke a notification if it becomes apparent that an application is inaccurate and/or untruthful. In the event of refusal or rejection, Applicants/Participants will be entitled to reimbursement of the Submission Fee, but they will not be entitled to such reimbursement if the notification is revoked.

          Applicants and/or Participants may withdraw their competition entry at any time before the jury holds its first meeting. Submission fees will not be reimbursed.

        4. 4. Adjudication

          GIA shall, at its sole, full and absolute discretion, organize, select and manage the Great Indoors Award Competition Jury, which shall adjudicate applications that have been appropriately examined, filtered and approved by GIA.

          Nothing shall legally obligate or require GIA or the GIA Jury to perform any or all of the following:

          • justify, reveal or explain their processes, inner workings and standards;
          • justify, reveal or explain their decisions and ultimate results at the end of the adjudication process.

          GIA intends to appoint an international jury, which will be composed of no more than eight members. Jury members will be selected on the basis of knowledge, experience and expertise. The jury will be appointed for the duration of one biennial competition. Members of the jury have permission to invite designers to participate in the competition. Names of jury members will be made public. GIA is at all times entitled to appoint a substitute juror. If no suitable substitute can be found, the jury will have fewer members than the number originally announced.

          A secretary representing GIA will be present at jury meetings to take the minutes. The secretary is not entitled to vote for or against entries in The Great Indoors Award. All employees of Stichting Bureau Europa; Stichting Marres, Centre for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht (NL) and Frame Publishers, Amsterdam (NL) are excluded as voting members of the jury.

          The jury shall have the support of a technical committee, to be appointed by the organizers. The task of the technical committee consists of verifying and selecting projects that meet the requirements stated in the rules and regulations set out in this document.

          Jury meetings are not open to the public, and all matters related to the evaluation of competition entries and the voting procedure are to be completely confidential. The jury intends to review all applications, pre-select five nominees in each category and select one prizewinner in each category. The jury shall prepare a jury report, stating the reasons for its decisions. All decisions of the jury will be final.

          The jury will judge the interior designs submitted, according to the following criteria:

          • Functionality
          • User-friendliness
          • Innovation
          • Use of materials and products
          • Artistic merit
          • Concept/inspiration

        5. 5. Awards

          One award is available in each of the four categories of The Great Indoors Award. All nominees will be informed by the beginning of October 2015. The organization will invite one representative from each nominated firm to attend the award ceremony at the organization’s expense.As a condition precedent for receiving the award, the nominee has to submit 1 video (max. 2 minutes) of the nominated design. Should the jury find that none of the competition entries in one or more of The Great Indoors Award categories adequately satisfies the aforementioned criteria (see 4. ADJUDICATION), no award or monetary prize will be given in that category or categories. Award winners will be announced during The Great Indoors event, which is to be held in Maastricht (NL) on 30 & 31 October 2015. Nominees will also be announced on the website www.the-great-indoors.com.

          Participants whose submission did not win an award, will be informed by e-mail no later than one month following the award ceremony. In furtherance to Clause 4 above, GIA may attempt to respond, answer and reply to any requests, queries or questions communicated by a Participant at any time; however, nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall legally obligate or require GIA to make such a response, answer or reply.

          All submissions are subject to the Dutch Act on privacy. All decisions made by the jury, and all discussion surrounding decisions other than what is included in the official jury report, shall be treated with complete confidentiality.

        6. 6. The applicant's warranty

          The Participant certifies and warrants that he or she is the sole and rightful owner of the intellectual property rights vested in the submitted design(s). If a design has been drafted by more than one person, all authors shall be included in the submission by the Participant. If the Participant is not the designer, the Participant shall warrant that he or she is the owner of all intellectual property rights and separately state the full name and address of the actual designer(s). The Participant certifies and warrants that the submitted design(s) do(es) not violate or infringe on any third-party rights.The Participant releases, discharges, and holds harmless GIA from any and all claims, demands or causes of actions that they may hereafter have by reason of the use of the Design(s).

        7. 7. License, Consent use of image (publicity)

          Upon receipt of notification of acceptance as described in paragraph 3, the Participant fully and unreservedly grants GIA non-exclusive worldwide use in perpetuity, free of any fee or license, including the right to authorize third parties, of the Participant’s design(s), together with provided information and metadata for informatory and publicity purposes in relation to the Great Indoors Award.

          The license includes the right to

          • broadcast in any media;
          • exhibit in any art gallery or exhibition;
          • publish, print and distribute in any media, including (but not limited to) Frame Publishers;
          • copy, and distribute copies in any form (whether analogue, digital or otherwise), including (but not limited to) videos, movies, DVDs, CDs, digital files and the like;
          • make available in the form of a web page or digital file on any computer network (includingThe Great Indoors website);
          • promote Participants in any manner deemed fit and suitable by GIA.

          In applying for the Great Indoors Award, the Participant grants GIA permission to take and to have full and free use of video/photographs containing their image/likeness. It is understood that these images may be used for promotional, news, on-line/multimedia, research and/or educational purposes by and for the Great Indoors Award competition. 

          The Participant releases, discharges, and holds harmless GIA from any and all claims, demands or causes of actions that they may hereafter have by reason of the use of the images/likeliness. The Participant agrees that he or she is not entitled to remuneration, residuals, royalties or any other payment from GIA or third parties in respect of the use of their design(s), image/likeness for the purposes set out in this clause.

          If GIA has no more use for the design(s), GIA is permitted to destroy or otherwise dispose of the Participant’s design(s) and copies thereof in the possession of GIA.Materials do not have to be returned.

        8. 8. Final

          GIA reserves the right to cancel or amend the Great Indoors Award competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of GIA’s control. GIA will notify Participants of any changes to the Great Indoors Award competition as soon as possible.

          GIA’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the Great Indoors Award competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The Participant is aware of the fact that neither an unsuccessful participation nor the consequences thereof can be held against GIA. GIA is not liable for any damages, costs or expenses in relation to the organization of the Great Indoor Awards and to the application and/or participation of any third party, except when the damage results from intent or gross negligence on the part of GIA.

          The Great Indoors Award competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by Dutch law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Amsterdam or Maastricht.
